Sussana Bolle at rare frequency wrote a nice review of shiverland and has been playing a few tracks off the album on her radio show.

the second release on serac is going to be the three part audio autopsy and stunningly honest self portait in sound by chicago producer and all around nice guy bitmoth (devon bryant).
the songs will come bundled together with poetry and a nice explanation of what went into the recording process. this is the sound of transition. catching a glimpse of yourself reflected in a window as you make a sudden turn. at least thats how it feels to me. here is a bit of text from the release:
“…I descended through my mind, found the place inside where dead memories were locked (and was told by a version of myself that I could not access many of my best and truest memories because I wasn’t a good enough person), and also found the place where music flowed through the middle of my mind (I can still feel that place as I write this, it’s a weird, river-y kind of vein that runs through the upper left bit of my brain and REALLY likes F#).”
17 validation through negation.

avoid defining yourself as the negative of what you are against. negative and positive space are the same image. re-define yourself. make new words. this is why i dislike the words experimental, independent, alternative (which is rarely used anymore) noise, even punk.
i like avant-garde because it is literally a forward moving word, but all its power seems lost. language changes, this is it’s nature. language is a tool it is not a rule of physics. i think the best you can do is avoid definition. once you find yourself defined it is time to move on. this is when art dies, the moment it recognizes itself in
a word.
resist the power of language. resist definition!
12 make me free - shiverland
deciding to release shiverland as a free download felt kind of like nursing a sick bird back to health for two years, and then opening the window. but the music should be free. asking you to pay for it is really me being afraid to let go. a way to keep track of it. to know where it is and where it’s been.
in order for these things to grow they need to be set free into the public mind. it really is scary, imagining the work mutated and misinterpreted. or unloved and ignored. or even to see it do well, loved and known and understood. see i’ve always imagined fame is like a shadow that you don’t really control. a copy of you living in the minds of countless people. you are not known, your fame shadow is known. celebrities die, their shadow selves live on forever in all those heads, the ghost burns brighter the more copies there are of it. this applies to art, the same way it applies to people. it must be frightening to see a work of art you created live on without you like this. like the mona lisa, the real painting and the countless copies. if the original is lost, the copies gain MORE power. eek scary.
but here it is for you. consume it copy it distribute it. just give me credit, and don’t try to make money with it or my lawyers will find you.

i’m in the process of cutting folding and printing the art for SHIVERLAND. it looks great, and feels nice too thanks to the soft paper i found in little tokyo. it should be done by the end of the month and ready to be shipped off to hungry ears.
also the label is coming together. a new site is about to go up, and new releases are already planned from chicago producer/musician BITMOTH.
